Diamond or Brilliant?

 

There is a big difference between the two terms, although they are often used as synonyms. A diamond is the transparent gemstone composed by carbon  at 99.95%, whose name derives from the greek “adamas” - invincible. The term brilliant indicates the cut style, not the shape, of a precious stone. A brilliant cut means that the precious stone is cut according to specific geometries with at least 57 facets and it’s used to have maximum sparkle and to generate the greatest brightness in the eyes of the observer. The most common shape of a brilliant cut is round.



The diamond cut is classified according to the standards introduced about a century ago by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and constantly updated to accommodate advances cutting techniques. The parameters for judging the cut - CUT (one of the 4 C) - a diamond are 3: Scaling, Polishing and Symmetry. The dated and folk terminology such as "cutting amsterdam", "cut antwerp", "Russian cut" ... I do not have any meaning today: to understand the quality of a cut of a diamond should refer to their gemological certificate. And 'therefore correct to define a shape diamond with round brilliant cut or such a Sapphire Blue with brilliant cut round. Other forms are the teardrop shape, oval, marquise or shuttle bus heart ... the square shape is defined according to the characteristics of the cut: princess, radiant, cushion, etc ...

We correctly define a round brilliant cut or, for example, a sapphire round brilliant cut. Other shapes are pear, oval, marquise, heart,…and the square shape is defined according to the characteristics of the cut: princess, radiant, cushion, etc...
